About Cobb Veterinary Clinic

Cobb Veterinary Clinic was founded by Dr. Robert L Cobb, who grew up in rural Texas in the small town of Haskell, where his dream of becoming a veterinarian began. When he graduated from Texas A&M University in 1979, he knew he wanted to provide quality veterinary care to those in rural areas and those in the ranch and rodeo world in which he was raised. Upon graduation, an opportunity to work with Dr. Mike Close of Midland was available, and he was eager to get started. He worked with Dr. Close for his first year and then ventured out on his own as a mobile veterinarian in 1980. While working out of his truck, he purchased land and began building the practice, which officially opened in 1982. It started off with the office, large animal exam area and barn, the arena, and one small animal exam room. It also included a small apartment above the clinic where Dr. Cobb lived.

How We Began

To say that Dr. Cobb dedicated all of his time to the beginning of this clinic is an understatement. He lived, worked, and played all in this one place we know and love as Cobb Veterinary Clinic. He loved the community where he planted and hosted many ropings and other events right in his backyard. Eventually, he met the love of his life and married Shauna, and she too lived in the small apartment above the clinic for some time. As the clinic grew, so did the Cobb family. They built a home next door and raised their family. The clinic itself continued to grow, and Dr. Cobb was always excited to advance the technology with new equipment and new doctors.

Doing What We Love

Dr. Cobb also has a passion for Equine Reproduction and added a barn and lab as well as new stalls to further his love for that specialty. Dr. Cobb has always been dedicated to teaching and encouraging others who want to pursue the veterinary field. Many young aspiring veterinarians and technicians have come to Cobb Veterinary Clinic to learn and grow in the field. He has hosted the Midland College Veterinary Technology students, and they have used the equine and cattle facilities to expand their skills. He has also hosted many educational events at the clinic to inform the public about animal care.

Building on Strengths

As he added to his veterinary team, he felt strongly about using each doctor’s strengths to provide the best veterinary care we could offer to our patients. He loves to teach, but he also loves to learn from the new graduates that come to the clinic to start their veterinary careers, just as he had learned from and shared with Dr. Close. Cobb Veterinary Clinic has always been a family-oriented clinic. The staff and clients are treated like family. There have been many weddings, sports events, children’s birthdays, and sadly even funerals attended that were all family of Cobb Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Cobb is a mentor in veterinary medicine and even in life. Everyone knows that he is available; and is the first to listen and understand if there was a problem at work or in life. He is there for us. He has recently moved on to focus on Shauna, and his girls as their lives are constantly changing and moving. It is an honor to continue the practice on the strong foundation on which he built it. His presence is missed daily, but his mentorship is just a phone call away.
